This page provides a list of fonts provided by the Windows7/8 and Mac OS X SnowLeopard/Lion operating systems, grouped by script. This kind of list could be used to set font-family styles for CSS, if you want to be reasonably sure what someone reading a page will see, or it could be used just to find a font you like for a particular script. I'm still working on the list, and there are some caveats – see the notes at the end of the page.
FontForge allows you to create and edit fonts in many formats: OpenType, TrueType, AAT, PostScript, Multiple Master, CID-Keyed, SVG, and various bitmap formats. It isn't a regular Mac application. It has been in development since 2001 as a UNIX application, so don't expect it to look and behave like a normal Mac application. Some of the fonts listed above may be disabled on the user's system. I'm making an assumption that someone who reads Tibetan will have the Tibetan font turned on, but for my articles that explain writing systems to people in English, such assumptions may not hold.
The list I used to identify Windows7 fonts should be fairly stable, as is the companion list for Windows8, but the Mac font spans more than one version of Mac OS X, and I could only find an unofficial list of fonts for Snow Leopard, and there were some fonts on that list that I didn't have on my system.See the official list of fonts on Mac OS X Lion. Where a Mac font is new with Lion or Windows8 (and there are a significant number) it is indicated.
This list is aimed at end users. For application developers, it is considered poor practice to reference fonts bundled in the OS by name, and they should instead reference fonts through the use of 'get system font' or 'get application font' APIs that select fonts based on language or script. Doing so effectively insulates application developers from font changes across different versions of the OS.
There shouldn't be any fonts listed here for a given script that aren't supplied with Windows7/8 or Mac OS X Snow Leopard/Lion, but there are probably supplied fonts that are not yet listed here (typically these will be large fonts that cover multiple scripts). In particular, note that I haven't yet made a list of fonts that support Latin, Greek and Cyrillic (mainly because there are so many of them and partly because I'm wondering how useful it will be.)
The text used is as much as would fit on one line of article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, taken from this Unicode page, wherever I could find it. I created a few instances myself, where it was missing, and occasionally I resorted to arbitrary lists of characters.
You can obtain a character-based version of the text used by looking at the source text: look for the title attribute on the section heading.
Things to do:
- create sections for Latin, Greek and Cyrillic fonts
- figure out how to tell, and how to show which is the system default
- work out and show what's not available in Windows XP
- figure out whether people with different locale setups see different things
- check which fonts don't work in all browsers
- add information about which fonts don't include A-Za-z
Locations
Typeface 2 lets you import fonts from directories on your Mac, external disks or network shares.These directories are added as linked locations to the sidebar, so you can easily view them later.
To import fonts you can use one of the following methods:
Font Design Software Mac
- Choose File > Import…
- Click the (+) button in the sidebar and choose ‘Import Fonts'
- Drag and drop a folder with your fonts from Finder onto Typeface app
Typeface doesn't move or copy your font files and directories, it just links to their location.This means that you can organize your font directory structure however you want.
You could create a single font directory on your Mac and put all your bought and downloaded fonts into that directory, or you could for example store font files in the project directories for which they are used.Either way Typeface will scan the locations and its subdirectories for font files (*.ttf, *.otf, *.dfont, *.ttc) and imports them into the app.
Location options
There are a couple of options you can change when you import a directory:
- Include subdirectories
- Skip hidden files
- Skip packages
These settings are location specific, i.e. for some locations you want to scan all subdirectories and for some you don't.Change these options before import by clicking on the ‘Options' button in the bottom left corner:
Preferences
The following options are global and are applied for each imported location.You can find them in the app Preferences in the ‘Library' tab.
Import duplicates
If the ‘Import Duplicates' option is unchecked, Typeface will not import fonts which have the same PostScript name as already imported fonts.For example if you have Helvetica-Light imported from macOS and have a separate Helvetica-Light font somewhere else, Typeface will not import it.
When this option is enabled Typeface will import duplicates as well, but remember that only one can be activated at the same time (otherwise you'll get font conflicts).
Import hidden fonts
Some fonts files contain hidden fonts, starting with a leading ‘.' (dot), e.g. '.Al Bayan PUA Plain'.These fonts are normally not visible in other apps, so you probably don't want to see them in Typeface as well.But if you want you can import them by checking the ‘Import Hidden Fonts' option in the Preferences panel.
Classify Fonts on import
Typeface automatically classifies imported fonts if the information is available.The following tags will be applied:
- #style/monospaced
- #style/ornamental
- #style/sans
- #style/script
- #style/serif
- #style/symbolic
Application Font Macos
If you don't want these tags or want to manage these tags yourself, uncheck the ‘Classify Fonts on Import' option in the app Preferences.
Refreshing & syncing
On launch Typeface refreshes all your imported locations automatically.If you want to manually refresh a location you can right click on the location name in the sidebar and choose ‘Refresh'.
Removing locations
You can remove a location by right clicking on it in the sidebar and choosing ‘Remove Location'.Note that when you remove a location its imported fonts will be removed from Typeface as well (but your font files will remain on your disk of course!).This also means that these fonts lose their attached tags.Make sure to backup your tags if you want to import those fonts later and restore their tags.
Missing Fonts
If you remove fonts from your disk Typeface will notice that on sync and will remove the fonts from your library.The attached tags are remembered for you, so if you accidentally removed the fonts and want to import them again later their tags are restored.
Transitioning from Font Book
Typeface will automatically import all fonts (both activated and deactivated) from Font Book.You don't have to change anything in Font Book, just keep your fonts installed.However, it is recommended to move the fonts in ~/Library/Fonts to some other location.If you don't do this and deactivate a font located in ~/Library/Fonts using Typeface it might be reactivated by Font Book, because it monitors that directory.
The first time you launch Typeface it will also import your collections, so you can continue organizing your library where you left off.
Google Fonts
Typeface can import the full Google Fonts catalog with 2000+ fonts into your library.When imported Typeface keeps the fonts up-to-date so you'll automatically get the latest fonts when they're added to the catalog.
To import the Google Fonts catalog go to Preferences > Import and click on the ‘Import Google Fonts' button.This will add a ‘Google' location to your sidebar.

Typekit
Import your Typekit fonts by opening the app Preferences, choosing Import and clicking the ‘Import Typekit Fonts' button.This will add a ‘Typekit' (‘livetype') location to your sidebar.Note that not the full Typekit library will be visible, only Typekit fonts which are synced (downloaded) to your Mac.

Microsoft Word is an incredible app that is used by many people around the world each day. It's also decades old, and has a ton of features most of us simply won't use. This is also what makes it the most well-rounded writing and editing platform.
As great as Word is, there are times you'll find missing features or issues. One of the things many people find fault with in Word is it doesn't have the font they're looking for. While Word has tons of fonts, some people are looking for specific fonts Word doesn't have.
One thing to keep in mind about Word is it takes advantage of your system fonts. Word doesn't have fonts of its own, so to get fonts into the Word app, you'll need to add them to your Mac, too! You can't simply add fonts to Word Mac apps.
Note: Adding fonts to Mac also means you can use them in other apps!
Here we'll show you how to download fonts, and how to install fonts on Mac Word apps.
How to Add Fonts to Word for Mac
Fonts on your Mac live in the Font Book, a built-in app Apple added to macOS to manage fonts for your Mac. It's also where you add fonts to your Mac – but first, let's get a font!
To download fonts to Word, we need to have fonts in Font Book, and we need to first locate a font our Mac doesn't have. Navigating to Google Fonts shows you all the fonts that are great for use on the web, and it's a good repository for downloading fonts you want to use for Word. We've chosen to use Google's own font, Roboto, for this exercise.
On Google Fonts, each font has a download option on the top right of its page. So, this is how to download fonts - simply click that, and the font family will download to your Mac. It's a zip file, so when it's in your downloads folder, unzip it.
Now that we've downloaded and unzipped our font, here's how to add a font to Font Book:
- Open Font Book on your Mac
- In the app, select the ‘plus' icon on the top of the main window
- Select your font from its location on your Mac
- Select 'Open'
That's it! You've downloaded a font and added it to your Mac. The first steps are completed.
Note: You won't be able to add fonts from zipped files, so unzipping the file is an important step you can't skip. If you've encountered a problem with loading your font, make sure it's been unzipped.
So how do you add fonts to Microsoft Word on a Mac? You don't need to know how to add fonts Word Mac apps take care of it for the most part. It's very simple to understand how to download fonts here. After you load the font, you may need to restart your Mac to have the font recognized, but that's as much interaction as you'll have to do to use your font in Word.
Once you start using Word, the app will search your Mac for all available fonts, and you can use whatever font you like.
Note: It's a good idea to close the Word app down while you're performing these steps. Once you start Word up again, it searches your Mac for available fonts, and the font you downloaded and added should appear in the list. If you're not seeing it, restart your Mac.
How to Add Fonts to Word Online
Native apps are one thing, but Microsoft has made an effort to make its web-based apps much better. Luckily, you can also use your fonts to the online version of Word!
Word in Office 365 searches your system for available fonts. All you have to do is type the name of the font you downloaded into the font options box.
When you save your document created with the font, the font name will show up in the font options box. It will display under that font on your Mac. If you send the file to a user who doesn't have the font on their computer, it will default to a font installed on their device.
Note: Word online doesn't allow you the option to embed fonts.
Other Ways How to Add Fonts to Word
Font Book is a great, basic method to add fonts to your Mac – but there's a better way. An app named Typeface is so good you might just keep adding and managing fonts for the fun of it!
Typeface has a striking interface that immediately shows you a preview of all the fonts available on in a tiled view. It's perfect for those times you need to see side by side comparisons of fonts, which can happen once you get really picky about the fonts you want to use.
Typeface allows you to add fonts, but has a really handy management feature: you can create and manage tags for fonts. If you're wondering why you'd want to do that, there are tons of reasons. You could have preferred fonts for specific file types (like resumes) or even specific segments within a file type (like resume headers).
It can also be useful for those who are managing fonts for a website. There's also a preview text input box for categories, a great option for those times you're really trying to find the perfect font (or fonts) for particular words.
Of course, you can use the slider in the top right of the Typeface window to resize fonts as needed, and there's a great tool designers will love in the View menu named 'Show Metrics.' It adds two bars to each text field so designers can see exactly how fonts measure up to one another. Selecting a font brings up a list of its individual characters, so you can really drill down to see which are the best options for your unique use-case.
To add a font using Typeface, simply click the plus icon on the bottom left of the Typeface window, and select 'Import Fonts.' It's the same procedure as with Font Book!
Note: Typeface also requires that you unzip your font file, so remember to follow that critical step here as well.
Typeface is simply the best font manager for those of us who like to get very detail oriented about which fonts we use, and where. We really like that Typeface text input follows you around the app; if you type something into the text field, selecting the various categories will display the same text as previews of the fonts in those categories.
It's also a fantastic app for users who are managing fonts for various projects. Instead of writing them all down somewhere, you can just categorize and tag fonts as you like!
Conclusion
Word is an incredible app with tons of standout features, but no app can have all the fonts! Word, like any other app, will leave some wanting more.
